Eric Garcetti — City of Los Angeles
Mayor
HE LATEST: Garcetti said in December that he turned down an unspecified role in the Biden administration to remain in Los Angeles. His term as mayor expires in 2022. Garcetti had served as Joe Biden’s campaign co-chairman and was part of the search committee for Biden’s running mate. Garcetti has led the city through a massive vaccination effort, opening vaccination sites at Dodger Stadium and USC. The city’s homelessness epidemic remains an ongoing priority for Garcetti’s administration.
BACKGROUND:
Garcetti was elected the 42nd mayor of Los Angeles in 2013. He previously represented the 13th City Council District from 2001 to 2013 and served four terms as City Council president. Garcetti has overseen initiatives including the L.A. College Promise, raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour and cutting business taxes to help drive economic recovery. A native Angeleno, he served as an intelligence officer in the Navy Reserve. Garcetti received his BA and MA from Columbia University, studied as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University, and later studied at the London School of Economics. He is also a jazz pianist and photographer.
