Frank Gehry — Gehry Partners
Architect
THE LATEST:
At age 92, Pritzker Prize-winning architect Gehry is still putting his stamp on Los Angeles in a big way. Construction of the Gehry-designed downtown project The Grand, a $1 billion development that will include retail, residential and hotel space, reached its halfway point last summer, with completion set for early next year. In September, Gehry Partners unveiled designs for a pair of new concert halls at the Colburn School of Performing Arts, also on Grand Avenue; the total project cost is estimated at $310 million. In December, Gehry unveiled a revised design for Townscape Partners’ 8150 Sunset project of two mid-rise buildings with 203 residential units and more than 50,000 square feet of ground-floor retail. And in January, Gehry submitted a new master plan design for the Los Angeles River, which calls for elevated parks along the river’s banks and a $150 million cultural center in South Gate.
BACKGROUND:
Gehry established his first practice in 1962 in Los Angeles. He formed his current architectural partnership, Gehry Partners, in 2001. Gehry is known for his innovative and unconventional designs, many of which use new materials and are often described as sculptural rather than structural. He personally designs and directs each project, which include academic, commercial, museum, performance and residential spaces around the world.
