Michael Maltzan — Michael Maltzan Architecture Inc.
Design Principal
THE LATEST:
The MMA-designed Sixth Street Viaduct Replacement project downtown is beginning to take shape over the Los Angeles River. Construction on the bridge arches began last fall, and completion of the $588 million project is set for mid-2022. The architecture firm is now designing the Alvidrez, a 14-story tower on downtown’s Skid Row with 150 studio apartments and support spaces on the ground floor. Another MMA-designed project, an 85,000-square-foot mixed-use building at 1600 Wilshire Blvd. in Westlake, hit a roadblock last year when a neighborhood group filed an appeal to block construction. The neighborhood group lost the appeal, and the developer, Michael Maltzan Architecture’s client, prevailed.
BACKGROUND:
Maltzan founded MMA, a firm that has become known for experimenting with new forms and materials, in 1995. Replicas of his designs can be found in museums and art collections. Maltzan holds degrees in architecture and fine arts from the Rhode Island School of Design and a master of architecture from Harvard University. He is a fellow of the American Institute of Architecture and a recipient of the American Academy of Arts and Letters Architecture Award.
