Thomas Rosenbaum — Caltech

THE LATEST:
In February, Caltech celebrated the opening of the Tianqiao and Chrissy Chen Institute for Neuroscience &emdash; a three-story, 150,000-square-foot facility founded with a $115 million gift from philanthropists Tianqiao Chen and Chrissy Luo. This spring, Caltech is opening the Amazon Web Services Center for Quantum Computing, where researchers and engineers from Amazon.com Inc., Caltech and other institutions will focus on developing more powerful quantum computing hardware and software and on identifying new applications for quantum technologies. In February, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which is overseen by Caltech, guided the successful landing on Mars of the Perseverance rover spacecraft, the largest craft to land on the red planet.
BACKGROUND:
Rosenbaum, who joined Caltech in 2014 as its ninth president, is also a physics professor and an expert in quantum mechanics. Previously, he conducted research at Bell Laboratories, IBM Watson Research Center, the University of Chicago and the Argonne National Laboratory. Rosenbaum is an elected fellow of the American Physical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He also serves on the board for the Argonne National Laboratory. Locally, he is a member of the Los Angeles Coalition for the Economy & Jobs and the Los Angeles World Affairs Council and Town Hall’s board.
