THE LATEST: In March, Griffin Capital Essential Asset REIT Inc. completed its purchase of Phoenix-based Cole Office & Industrial REIT Inc. for $1.2 billion. The combined company consists of 125 properties totaling 31 million square feet, with a total asset value of $5.8 billion. Last year, Shields, was selected as a Top 25 Opportunity Zone influencer and a Top 25 fund manager and developer by Opportunity Zone Magazine.
BACKGROUND: Shields founded El Segundo-based Griffin Capital in 1995. The investment firm has owned, managed, sponsored or co-sponsored investment programs encompassing approximately $19 billion in assets. It sponsors or co-sponsors several public, non-listed real estate investment trusts. The firm’s senior executives and employees have co-invested more than $300 million in its sponsored investment verticals. Before founding Griffin, Shields was a senior vice president and head of the structured real estate finance group at Jefferies & Co. Inc. Shields is chairman emeritus of the Investment Program Association and a policy advisory board member for the Fisher Center for Real Estate.
