Elon Musk — SpaceX, Boring Co., Tesla Motors Inc.
Chief Executive
THE LATEST:
SpaceX beat its own launch record in 2020, completing 26 missions in 12 months. The company is rapidly deploying satellites in support of its Starlink program, which aims to create a global broadband network accessible to customers in remote areas. At the same time, SpaceX is testing prototypes of its enormous Starship rocket designed for interplanetary space travel. Musk said last year that the company aims to launch a mission to Mars in 2022.
BACKGROUND:
Musk, who ranked No. 1 on the Business Journal’s list of Wealthiest Angelenos in 2020 with an estimated net worth of $75 billion, has seen his fortune climb even further since then as Tesla stock has soared. The South Africa-born entrepreneur also announced in early 2021 that he would be moving to Austin, Texas, and sold off all of his homes in Los Angeles. Musk moved to California in 1995 to attend Stanford but dropped out after two days and founded web software company Zip2, which sold to Compaq in 1999. He also founded X.com, which later became PayPal and was acquired by eBay Inc. in 2002. That same year, Musk founded SpaceX. He launched Tesla Inc. in 2003 and took the company public in 2010.
