THE LATEST: Virgin Hyperloop is building a futuristic transportation system in which passenger pods would travel through nearly airless tunnels at speeds approaching 700 miles per hour. The company transported its first live passengers in a November test, and Giegel was one of them. Virgin Hyperloop also announced plans last year to construct a certification facility in West Virginia where the new technology can be demonstrated for federal safety regulators.
BACKGROUND: Giegel co-founded Hyperloop Technologies Inc., doing business as Virgin Hyperloop, in 2014. He was promoted from chief technology officer to chief executive in February. Prior to Virgin Hyperloop, Giegel served as a propulsion stage systems lead at Virgin Galactic. He also worked as an engineer at SpaceX and Echogen Power Systems. Giegel received his bachelor’s degree from Penn State University and holds a master’s in mechanical engineering from Stanford University.
