Chief Executive
THE LATEST:
Sterling is a real estate veteran who owns more than 160 apartment buildings in L.A. He has been acquiring apartment units since the 1960s. He is also the former owner of the Los Angeles Clippers. Sterling and his wife, Shelly, were No. 15 on the Business Journal’s Wealthiest Angelenos list in 2020 with an estimated net worth of $5 billion.
BACKGROUND:
Chicago native Sterling trained as a lawyer and moved to L.A. in the 1960s, where he became involved in real estate. He purchased the San Diego Clippers in 1981 and moved the team to L.A. three years later. He sold the team to former Microsoft Corp. Chief Executive Steve Ballmer in 2014 after a tape of Sterling using racial epithets became public. He settled with the National Basketball Association in 2016 after claiming that the league and Shelly conspired to sell the team.
