THE LATEST: J2 Global announced in April that it would spin out its cloud fax division into a separate, publicly traded company called Consensus. Prior to that, the company finished 2020 on a buying spree, completing four acquisitions in the year’s final quarter. Most significant was the purchase of Austin, Texas-based deal-finding startup RetailMeNot in a deal worth $420 million. Shah told investors in November that RetailMeNot drove four times the retail sales generated by J2’s brands prior to the acquisition.
BACKGROUND: J2 Global provides internet services through its business services and digital media arms. The company has made nearly 200 acquisitions since its formation in 1995, with the vast majority completed after 2010. Shah joined the company in 2018 after serving as chief executive of digital media company Ziff Davis, acquired by J2 in 2012. Shah also worked in management positions at Time Inc. He is a graduate of Tufts University.
